Slot Machine Myths

There are a lot of things that people think about slot machines that just aren't right. We've brought you the best things that we've heard that just aren't quite true.

The best slot machines are together

It would be stupid for a casino to keep their best machines together. Casinos scatter the machines around the gaming floor so that people can see other people winning. This is one of the major points that keeps people playing longer. Think about it. Would you keep playing if there was no one around you that was winning?

Slot machines have "hot" and "cold" cycles

This couldn't be further from the truth. Every spin of a slot machine is random, and follows no set pattern at all. if a machine seems to be paying out more or less at some time that is because you've got luck on your side with the random numbers being generated. This is no guarantee that any machine will continue running hot or cold for any amount of time.

Pulling the handle beats pressing the button

This makes no difference whatsoever. If you want to know more about why, look at our Slot Machine Odds section to find out why pressing a button and pulling a lever both result in exactly the same result. All you are ever doing is sending a small electrical trigger to start the game, so it doesn't matter how it's done, you'll still get the same result.

The only real slots are mechanical

Mechanical slots are only better because they are able to be cheated. They still work on the same basis that every other slot machine does, and give the same payout's as every other machine in the casino. If they didn't, they wouldn't be there.

Electronic machines are better for higher payout's, better jackpots, more variations in the games, more pay lines and more reels. These games are superior to the mechanical slots and really do show that the new technology is something that should be played for all the benefits.

You can make your odds better by pressing the button at the right time

Even though this is somewhat true with the generation of random numbers, the chances of being able to get this just right are to billions against you. As we've said, the slot machines generate 100's of random numbers every second, and for you to get that one micro-second where they all line up right is a very long shot, and close to impossible. It's impossible for the human brain to act on that impulse because reaction time between when your brain tells you to hit the button, and your muscles actually move your finger to hit the button are in fractions of seconds, and by that time, 100 or more numbers have flown past.

My favorite slot machine pays out more

I'm sure that everyone has a favorite machine because it's given them some good payout's in it's time. But that's just about luck of when you are there. That same machine may have given out some prizes to you, but that just means that it's taken money of someone else. Having a favorite machine is great, but make sure that you have a favorite machine because it suits your style of play, not because you think it pays out more. One day it will stop paying out, and you'll just be feeding it dead money.
